SAMPLE ITINERARY

 

SUNDAY

2:00pm- Parent and Student Check-in (gear fit, paperwork, orientation) 
4:30pm- Parents leave and students/staff drive to Purchase Knob in Waynesville, NC (Great Smoky Mountains): Camping at Appalachian Science Center
6:00pm- Set up camp, cook dinner
7:00pm- Inside classroom – introduction to the week, what to expect, how to stay safe & together, etc. 

MONDAY

7:30am- Breakfast
8:00am- Field Science Training (hikes, visit salamander biology plots) 
Noon- Lunch at Science Center
1:00pm- Climate Science and afternoon activities (visit weather station) 
5:30pm- Dinner
7:00pm- Nighttime activities (varies from viewing fireflies, night hikes, stargazing, working on science questions and posters, enjoying hot cocoa) 
9:00pm- Lights out

TUESDAY

8:00am- Breakfast
9:00am- Depart for High Elevation research site and conduct field science Noon- Lunch
1:00pm- Travel down to low country site and field science
3:00pm- Oconaluftee Classroom for Science work
4:30pm- Visit Oconaluftee Museum and River Trail
6:00pm- Dinner back at Purchase Knob
7:00pm- Nighttime activities (varies from viewing fireflies, night hikes, star gazing) 

WEDNESDAY

8:00am- Breakfast
9:00am- Leave to go backpacking - All day hike, bird watching, salamander and snail searches Noon- Lunch along trail
1:00pm- Hike and set up camp
5:30pm- Supper at backcountry campsite over campfire
7:00pm- Nighttime activities (synchronous fireflies) 

THURSDAY

9:00am- Continue backpacking to the next campsite
All day hike, bird watching, salamander and snail searching

Noon- Lunch along trail
1:00pm- Continue hiking and exploring the Smokies
5:30pm- Supper at backcountry campsite over campfire
7:00pm- Nighttime activities (campfire stories) 

FRIDAY

7:00am- Pack up campsite
8:00am- Breakfast
8:30am- Hike out
11:00am- Arrive to vans
Noon- lunch on road
1:00pm- Arrive at Montreat/ Shower/ go to computer lab to finish up presentations for parents 4:45pm- Parents arrive
5:00pm- Students present science and expedition details to parents!!
