Cost

Through the McDowell County grant, we are able provide MYLES of Science at Mt. Mitchell Free of charge for high school students that attend McDowell County High Schools.  We are seeking dedicated high school students that have an interested in a career in field-science, enjoy exploration and adventure.

Food, transportation, backpacking equipment, and everything else one would need to live comfortably outside. We also provide excellent staff leadership and science equipment. Your student will just need to bring their own outdoor clothes and a good pair of hiking boots.  Please see the equipment list for specific requirements for clothing.

  • Take exit 64 (Black Mountain)
  • Go NORTH on Broadway (NC-9)
  • Take a Left onto Terry Estate Drive
  • Take another left onto Vance Avenue
  • Once on campus follow MYLES of Science Signs with Arrows

Sample Itinerary

SUNDAY

2:00pm- Parent and Student Check-in (gear fit, paperwork, orientation) 
4:30pm- Parents leave and students/staff drive to Mt. Mitchell
6:00pm- Set up camp, cook dinner
7:00pm- Inside classroom – introduction to the week, what to expect, how to stay safe & together, etc. 

MONDAY

7:30am- Breakfast
8:00am- Field Science Training (hikes, visit research plots) 
Noon- Lunch at Science Center
1:00pm- Research Plot and afternoon activities
5:30pm- Dinner
7:00pm- Nighttime activities (varies from viewing fireflies, night hikes, stargazing, working on science questions and posters, enjoying hot cocoa) 
9:00pm- Lights out

TUESDAY

8:00am- Breakfast
9:00am- Leave to go backpacking - All day hike, bird watching, finding macroinvertebrates
Noon- Lunch along trail
1:00pm- Hike and set up camp
5:30pm- Supper at backcountry campsite over campfire
7:00pm- Nighttime activities(fireflies) 

WEDNESDAY

8:00am- Breakfast
9:00am- Leave to go backpacking - All day hike, bird watching, exploration
Noon- Lunch along trail
1:00pm- Hike and set up camp
5:30pm- Supper at backcountry campsite over campfire
7:00pm- Nighttime activities

THURSDAY

9:00am- Continue backpacking to the next campsite
All day hike, bird watching, exploration

Noon- Lunch along trail
1:00pm- Continue hiking and exploring Pisgah National Forest
5:30pm- Supper at backcountry campsite over campfire
7:00pm- Nighttime activities (campfire stories) 

FRIDAY

7:00am- Pack up campsite
8:00am- Breakfast
8:30am- Continue Hiking
1:00pm- Arrive at Montreat/ Shower/ go to computer lab to finish up presentations for parents 4:45pm- Parents arrive
5:00pm- Students present science and expedition details to parents!!
